INFRASTRUCT3URE IS POOR, BUT IT CAN CHANGE FAST
Many townships don’t have roads to them, and 20 per cent of homes rely on candles for lighting. The trains are slow and home Wi-Fi is almost non-existent. But economic restructuring, foreign investment and aid promise to change that. The country has committed to deliver universal access to electricity by 2030, and is leapfrogging fixed-line telecommunications services that have been lacking for years. Roads and bridges are being built. There remain significant problems and running a business day-to-day is a challenge. But then, two years ago, hardly anyone had a mobile phone; penetration is now 74 per cent. A year ago, international roaming didn’t exist for visitors’ phones; now, you have it.
