SPEEDING UP
While the transition from predominantly Mom and Pop stores to majority modern trade can take years, the speed at
which it happens has been gradually accelerating, Pal says.
More recently emerging markets in
Asia and Eastern Europe have been progressing faster through the stages of evolution than did Western European and North American markets.
Myanmar, Pal, says, can move even more quickly.
“Because of the speed with which Myanmar’s young population is adopting smartphone technology, we could see a jump to online retailing at a much earlier stage than in other markets. There will be limitations – online payment and delivery are a challenge – but they can be overcome.”
Rajinder Grover - GM (Commercial) at DKSH, which works with retail specialist and WPP company Smollan in Myanmar, says the modern trade and convenience stores are growing at double-digit rates.
