SPOTLIGHT ON
ENTERING MYANMAR – 10 KEY TAKEAWAYS
9 From the outside Myanmar may seem a largely homogeneous society in many ways; 88 per cent of the urban population is
Buddhist, and the majority ethnic Bamar. However there is also a great deal of ethnic, climatic and cultural variety that affects taste profiles and demand for personal care products. The central dry zone and lower Myanmar delta are where Bamar culture dominates. In alpine and coastal zones, there is more ethnic diversity; there are 135 recognized ethnic groups, each with their distinct cultures, gender dynamics and attitudes. Consumers in border regions have more exposure to international brands and marketing, so are often more open to new ideas than those Yangon and Mandalay.
