In the past three years, the cost of a mobile SIM card has gone from $2,000 to just $1.50, which means phone penetration has gone from zero to half the population. The entry of two new mobile networks means there are now three competing for business, and consumers are signing up on pre-paid deals in huge numbers. News, communications, research, banking, education, shopping – these are all areas ripe for development, and that development is coming at a time when suddenly mobile phones are both available and affordable. Facebook and chat platforms dominate internet use and, for many people, Facebook IS the internet. Connectivity is still hit and miss, but it is surely the way of the future.
